In the first days after a loss, a home can fill up quickly. Arrangements arrive at the door, casseroles come and go, and the phone keeps ringing. Flowers are a lovely, traditional way to reach out, and many people still send them. Sometimes, though, you may be looking for something a household can use day to day like a warm dinner no one has to cook, something that feels comforting, or a small gesture for someone you don't know well enough to call.

The packages below are gentle ways to reach out from a distance, chosen from the Spoonful of Comfort collection for times of loss. Each one can be sent on its own or alongside flowers, and each arrives with a folded note card with your own personal message. To narrow the list, we looked at four things:

How We Chose These Packages

Criteria	What We Considered
Practical Help	Whether the package takes a task off the household's plate, like making dinner on a hard night
Household Fit	Serving size compared with who is at home and who may be visiting
Comforting Keepsakes	Items that bring tangible comfort during a hard time and stay in the home after the food is gone, like a ladle, a blanket, or a book
Recipient Fit	Gluten-free and vegan versions, plus options for larger families, young children, pet owners, coworkers, and people who live alone

Before you send: Some people send a package in the first few days after a loss, while others wait a week or two, once visitors have gone home and the house is quieter. With Scheduled Delivery, you choose the arrival date at checkout. Packages ship to all 50 states (not to PO boxes), and the recipient doesn't need to be home to receive one. A quick text to let them know something is on the way can help it get to the fridge sooner. Everything in the package can be frozen, so it can be saved for whenever the time feels right.

1. Sympathy Soup Care Package, for a Household That Could Use a Warm Dinner

The Sympathy Soup Care Package sends a complete meal to their door: two quarts of handcrafted soup, a half-dozen rolls, a half-dozen cookies, a keepsake ladle, and a note card with your personal message. The soup is prepared in small batches under USDA supervision and blast-frozen, then packed with gel packs in an insulated liner so it thaws in transit and arrives ready to heat.

Founder Marti Wymer started Spoonful of Comfort at her kitchen table in 2008 with her own mother in mind, packing soup, rolls, and oatmeal cookies in cheerful yellow with ribbons tied by hand. Marti's story still shapes how each box is packed today. The ladle is meant to stay in the kitchen long after the soup is gone, a small reminder that someone was thinking of them.

4. Slumberkins Grieving Hearts Care Package, for Families With Young Children

When a family with little ones experiences a loss, the grown-ups are often caring for everyone else while grieving themselves. The Slumberkins Grieving Hearts Care Package sends support for both. Parents get a full soup meal with rolls and cookies, so dinner is handled. Children get a Slumberkins Sprite plush and two board books, Sprite Helps Say Goodbye and Sprite Offers Comfort, which can give families a gentle way to talk about big feelings together.

A For a Healing Heart greeting card, a keepsake ladle, and your personal note round it out.

6. Pet Loss Sympathy Package, for Someone Missing a Pet

Losing a pet can leave a real gap in someone's routine: the morning walk, the greeting at the door, the familiar sound in the next room. A small gesture from a friend can let them know that loss is seen. The Pet Loss Sympathy Package sends a full meal of comforting soup with a "Loved and Missed" message and your personal note.

Inside are two quarts of soup or a two-soup combo, a half-dozen homestyle rolls, a half-dozen cookies, and a keepsake ladle.

7. Cookie Comforts, for a Coworker or Someone You Know Less Well

Not every relationship calls for a full dinner. When the person grieving is a coworker, a neighbor, or a friend of a friend, a smaller gesture can feel just right. Cookie Comforts sends one dozen cookies, or two dozen for $10 more, in classic or seasonal flavors.

There's no occasion-specific greeting card inside, only a folded note printed with your message, so your words set the tone. That makes it easy to keep things warm and simple.

Small Ways to Make Any Package Feel Personal

If you'd like to add a little more, consider comforting Extra Care items, starting at $10. You can shape a package with add-ons such as blankets, socks, books, and pet treats. For recipients with dietary needs, gluten-free soups, gluten-free and vegan rolls and cookies, and vegetarian recipes like Garden Vegetable and Tomato Basil are available, with full details on the nutrition information page.

Choosing the Gesture That Feels Right

There's no single right way to reach out after a loss. Flowers, a card, a phone call, and a meal on the doorstep are all kind ways to let someone know they're not alone. When you'd like to send something a household can use, a care package built around a ready-to-heat dinner offers practical help along with the gesture itself.

Spoonful of Comfort has earned more than 100,000 five-star reviews, and its packages have appeared in national gift roundups from TODAY and Yahoo Shopping. Almost everything inside is meant to be used twice: the shipping box refolds into a patterned storage box, the soup tubs are microwave-safe and reusable, the bonnet doubles as a splatter cover, and the gel packs can be refrozen. Every order is backed by a 100% guarantee and Marti's promise to make and deliver each package "with as much care as if I were sending it to my own mother."

If one of these feels right, you can find the full collection of care packages for times of loss at spoonfulofcomfort.com.
