3 Inspiring Ways to Show Sympathy

Showing Sympathy

"Remember me with smiles and laughter, for that is how I will remember you all. If you can only remember me with tears, then don't remember me at all." – Laura Ingalls Wilder, American writer

We’ve all overcome pain and struggles. Some take life’s lemons better than others. And sometimes a friend or family member needs a little extra support. Will you be there to lift up those that are feeling down? Here are some thoughtful ways to show sympathy.

Call that person.

If something tragic has happened in the life of a friend, call them. It’s one thing to say “call if I can do anything.” It’s another to call on your own and then offer to help. If someone is experiencing down moments in life, it’s unlikely that they’ll ask for help. That doesn’t mean any less that the help is still needed. Offer your time to talk with them. Remind them of the good in life. Remember, listening is more important than talking.

Visit them.

If you live close enough to a friend that needs support, visit them. You never know how much an in-person visit can brighten someone’s day. Even if for just a moment.

Send a card or a gift.

Sometimes you want to do more than a phone call but are too far away to stop by in person. That’s a great opportunity to send a sympathy gift. Sympathy gifts from Spoonful of Comfort include a handwritten card with a message of your choice. Two birds, one stone.

Life is unpredictable. Nobody knows the future. That’s why coming together among friends is the best way to weather storms of adversity.
