Repurpose Your Jars Into This Pretty Herb Planter

Repurposing Jars Into Planters

Want to take your soups from delicious to “omg this is amazing?” Add some fresh herbs for a bowl of homestyle goodness that looks (and tastes) like it came from the menu of a gourmet restaurant.

Once you know the magic of fresh basil, or thyme, you’ll want it around for all your kitchen adventures, and with a little clever repurposing, it’s easy to make a mini indoor herb garden perfect for spicing up your favorite soup.

We love re-using the soup jars from our Spoonful of Comfort care packages they’re the perfect size for indoor herbs, and hanging them saves your counter-space for the important stuff— like cookie jars and your beloved coffee-maker. Here’s what you need to make your own DIY Mason Jar Planter.

Supplies:

  • Pipe clamps (and a screwdriver for tightening.)
  • Scrap wood with coordinating paint or stain (optional.)
  • D-rings and a set of drywall anchors
  • Bag of pebbles (find them at the dollar store, or the gardening section of your local craft store.)
  • Potting soil
  • A selection of your favorite herbs. We love basil, mint, and thyme for indoor gardens.

Directions

For the planters…

Fill the bottom of the planter jars with pebbles, about 1.5 inches high. Add potting soil and herbs, and enough water to make the soil damp. Place jars into pipe clamps, and use a screwdriver to tighten the clamps. Hang in the kitchen using drywall anchors to secure.

For the wall hanging…

Paint or stain your wood and let dry completely. Once your wood base is dry, attach the D-rings on the back. On the front, attach the pipe clamps equal distance apart, and then set aside.

Voila! You’ve got the perfect mini-herb garden right at arm’s reach. Your soups will never be the same, your dinner guests will think you’re a kitchen genius, and you can feel great about your new-found repurposing expertise. This is what we call a win-win-win.
